Kankakee Irish

The Kankakee Irish is a combined high school hockey program which can include players from 16 area high schools. The Irish participate in the Illinois West High School Hockey League, competing against schools or other combined high school teams from the Chicagoland suburbs. The Illinois West League provides student-athletes with the opportunity to play organized hockey while representing their schools and communities. The Kankakee Irish promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and skill development in a structured, competitive environment.

Ages

Kankakee Irish serves high school-aged players, generally ranging from freshmen to seniors. The league includes varsity and junior varsity levels to accommodate different skill levels and experience, allowing players to compete against peers of similar age and ability.

When

The Irish season runs from September through February. The team typically starts practices at the end of August with regular season games beginning in September. League playoffs will follow the regular season and may include games into February.

Where

Ice Valley Centre Ice Arena in Kankakee, IL is the home ice of the Kankakee Irish. Away games are held at participating teams’ local rinks, creating a diverse and competitive playing environment.

Practices

The Irish typically practice 2 times per week, with all practices held at the Ice Valley Centre Ice Arena in Kankakee, IL. Practices focus on developing individual skills, team strategies, and overall conditioning to prepare players for competitive league play. Our coaching staff emphasizes high-intensity drills, situational play, and team chemistry in a structured, supportive environment.

Games

Games are mostly held on weekends, depending on school and rink availability. Some weeknight games may be required depending on availability of opposing team and available ice.

Jerseys

Players receive team jerseys at the start of the season. Jerseys feature the Kankakee Irish colors and include player numbers and names. Players must provide their own USA Hockey-approved equipment, including helmets, pads, skates, and sticks, to ensure safety on the ice.

Extra Costs

Families should expect expenses related to registration fees, team jerseys (if not provided), tournament fees, travel costs for away games, and any additional equipment needs. The Irish program works to keep costs manageable while supporting a competitive high school hockey experience.

2026-2027 Season

In the Illinois West High School Hockey League, teams typically play a regular season of 20-24 games. The season usually runs from September to February. Following the regular season, there are playoffs, which add another 4-6 games.
